Good As Gold work, before 2015

Between 2008, when I set up Good As Gold, and around 2015, I wrote copy for high-profile clients that included BabyCentre UK, H. Samuel, Midlands Co-operative Society, Sky Digital Media (with LEGO DUPLO®), Toshiba, the University of Birmingham and Sandwell Council - as well as many smaller private companies.

Some of this work I brought in myself, some of it was through award-winning design agencies, including Happy Giraffe and eby design.

I wrote thirteen winning or shortlisted national award bids for Sandwell Council, which was just one benefit of knowing my client’s department (then Regeneration, later Business Growth) inside out.

I also built up lots of knowledge about search engine optimisation (SEO), branding and ‘tone of voice’ development, plus Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn techniques. I was lucky to undergo training with the Institute for Direct Marketing, Google, and others.

By the end of this period, I was a new mum with a toddler and another baby on the way, so I was grateful to take a retainer contract with Sandwell Council and simplify my working life. I was also researching and writing the first edition of my Slow Travel: Shropshire book for Bradt Travel Guides (you can see my travel-writing portfolio here), which took me and my family from Birmingham to Shropshire and the Welsh borders almost every week.

I let my website and social media channels go quiet for several years, while I adjusted to early motherhood.

I’ve emerged from those bleary years now, and I’m excited about building my business, acquiring new skills and forming new collaborations.
